My brother notes that Obama's first cabinet meeting was 3 months into his stint in office; see also the org chart at the treasury department in the midst of a historic financial crisis. I also recently heard other private anecdotes about the early administrative performance of the administration. (They weren't favorable.) The President has done a fair amount of head-of-state kind of stuff, wandering around the world talking in front of people, bowing to people, shaking hands, that sort of thing, but his domestic efforts have largely involved passing budgets and other legislative agenda.
It is, as was widely noted by last summer, the first time in 48 years that we've elected a President with no executive experience — there's a whole long digression in here about comments made to Ross Perot that the Presidency isn't an entry-level position, as though "politics" were the relative job grouping — and I can't help but think that's relevant here. Newt Gingrich in part seemed to reduce his effectiveness as Speaker by never really transitioning from Minority Whip, and Obama seems largely to see himself still as a legislator more than an executive.Labels: Obama
