Monday, April 20, 2009 :::
I've been meaning to say something more about the "tea parties", and the reaction thereto, and maybe I still will. But this is funnier:President Obama convened his Cabinet for the first time today Time-out for a moment -- is that normal? Maybe it's not necessary to have everyone in a meeting at once -- I assume he's been meeting regularly with each cabinet member -- but I would have thought he'd have a full cabinet meeting before the three-month mark.
Anyway, that wasn't the main point. Here's the point:and instructed department heads to trim their budgets by a combined $100 million over the next 90 days, cuts he said would help overcome a "confidence gap" among the American people about the use of their tax dollars. That's right. $100 million, with an "m". Thirty cents for every man, woman, and child in America. That's some serious belt-tightening right there, especially after the $800 billion stimulus package, or wherever that number finally landed.
This is like going out for dinner and ordering twelve courses, but telling the waiter to leave the cherry off of the hot fudge sundae because you're on a diet. They expect this to restore confidence that they can use our money judiciously. Apparently, they think we're stupid.
I hope they're wrong.Labels: Obama, self-parody
