I accept Patterico's point that illegal immigrants causing American deaths is especially "galling" whether or not they do so at a higher rate than Americans do. But when somebody makes a big point of the fact that, for example, the guy behind the wheel of a car that killed a pedestrian was an illegal alien, I don't assume the point is limited to "isn't that galling?" -- I assume there is a public policy point to go with it.
Mind you, the point could be on either side of the current arguments about illegal immigration. One could argue that an amnesty of long-term illegal aliens would lead more of them to get driver's licenses before they drive and generally to follow non-immigration laws and one could argue that cracking down on illegal immigration (and visa overstaying) is important as a public safety issue. But either of these arguments depends on the assumption that illegal aliens are, by nature of their status, uniquely dangerous, not just that they are human beings who occasionally do galling human things.
