Wednesday, July 21, 2010 :::
I have mixed feelings about David Cameron flying business class (I don't consider the Sun an especially reliable source, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on this). The story points out that there are legitimate security and time reasons for a prime minister (or even a top executive of a large company) to take a dedicated flight. The financial argument for flying commercial in and of itself is, in my mind, pretty weak, but the value of signalling to his nation that he is not exempt from the governmental cost-cutting and the value of the reminder to himself that he is not worthier than his countrymen are more substantial. In other words, this is not a particularly good decision for an administrator, but it is a good decision for a leader and (more cynically) for a politician.
Overall, I'm probably more favorably disposed toward this as a stunt to pull once in a while than as a policy to adhere to.Labels: David Cameron
