Sen. Byrd has died at the age of 92.
I recall reading a conservative making a distinction between the older generation of Democrats and the younger generation, that with a lot of the older Democrats you got someone who might support policies that the conservative disliked, but that there was a genuine love of country and belief in America behind them. I very much disagreed with Byrd on his penchant for appropriations, which on some level amounted to putting parochial interests ahead of the national interest, but there was no mistaking that he wasn't a blame-America-first Democrat; he was always proud of the special role of America in world history and proud that he could be a part of it.
