I'm a bit surprised that Helen Thomas is resigning -- presumably under pressure -- after her recent "Israeli Jews should go home to the diaspora" comments (one story is here). Firing Helen Thomas for being a crazy old nut is like firing Don Imus for saying offensive things on the radio. Or Mike Tyson for punching someone. Or Joe Biden for eating paste. Were her employers really surprised by her recent comments? Did they not know anything about her when they hired her?
If you want a trip down memory lane, here's some of her previous work. They don't include my favorite Helen Thomas moment, which was at a press conference shortly after the 2004 election. I don't actually remember what overwrought, tendentious question she asked, but the press secretary's response was, roughly, "you sound like a campaign ad that didn't work."
