Tuesday, March 02, 2010 :::
General Motors said tonight it will recall 1.3 million cars in North America to replace a power steering motor that could fail, following a federal probe launched in January. GM said the recall would cover 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalts, 2007-10 Pontiac G5s and similar models sold in Canada and Mexico. . . . Let's see if Congress gives GM the same treatment as Toyota. Contrary to appearances, I don't actually have too much time on my hands, so I didn't closely follow the canned outrage from Congress over Toyota's mistakes. But to the extent that their "treatment" of Toyota was related to faulty cars, I would hope Congress would scrutinize GM at least as closely as a company they don't own. But I think the biggest scandal from Toyota was what happened after the problems were discovered by people at Toyota; unless GM has demonstrated the same slowness to correct an error, they don't deserve quite as much grief.
