Was the US Men's Soccer team's victory over Spain today "the second-biggest upset by an American team, behind only the 1980 Miracle on Ice by the hockey team over the Soviet Union in the Olympics"? (link via Althouse) Soccer seems the right sport in which to look for an American upset, and the assertion that this was the "greatest victory by the men's national soccer team" is at least plausible. I'm trying to think of other contenders; the 2002 World Cup victory over Portugal comes to mind; it was a less surprising result, but it was a bigger stage.
