I think the person who emailed me this campaign to petition the FDA to reconsider its approval of "cloned food" expected me to be opposed to cloned food per se, rather than thinking that the "64% of Americans [who] are repulsed by the idea of eating food from cloned animals" are a bit daft. (I'm assuming that safety concerns have been scientifically addressed; it's imaginable to me that cloning techniques would cause something to go awry, though it takes a bit more imagination to get to something that wouldn't be fatal to the animal itself.) And while I have been acquiring a nascent affection for condescention by the government toward broad swaths of the population, I agree with these people that, if that many people object to it, the labeling should take place. Indeed, if it's true that Recognizing that requiring labels on cloned food would lead to a massive boycott by consumers, FDA bowed to industry lobbyists by stating that there likely will be no required labeling of food products containing ingredients from cloned animals. that is absolutely a reason for labeling requirements; when people get comfortable with it, and any benefit (even from irrational preferences) to the labeling drops below the costs of the labeling regime, that's the time to drop the labeling requirement.
