Idle thoughts of a relatively libertarian Republican in Cambridge, MA, and whomever he invites. Mostly political.

"A strong conviction that something must be done is the parent of many bad measures."

Republicans and conservatives traditionally obsess about policy for its own sake when they communicate. They routinely tout the need for tax cuts, spending restraint, balanced budgets and smaller government. But why? As one Republican candidate said years ago, they need to "complete the sentence." We mix it up in the hard slog of partisan debate because we want better lives and bigger dreams.

Conservatives shouldn't begin every dialogue by showing just their policy cards; liberals easily trump that tactic. Instead, start with what is in your gut. How about telling your neighbors that more freedom, the rule of law and government closer to the people help communities thrive so that the next generation will be better off than the one that came before? Don't just tell them markets serve people better than bureaucracy; say why. And tell voters politics is not just about tax cuts, spending less and balancing budgets, but about how to achieve a better life for their fellow man. And then listen. Remember, as conservatives we believe government doesn't have all the answers.
Nothing to add.
