Idle thoughts of a relatively libertarian Republican in Cambridge, MA, and whomever he invites. Mostly political.

I'm not quite sure what to say about this:Bruno The Bear has become a folk hero all over [Germany] since having the temerity to stroll on over from Austria, but he was killed this week amid much consternation. Shockingly, at least it was shocking to me, there have been no bears in Germany for 170 years, yet there are 50,000 throughout Europe, a fact that everyone in my local bar in Berlin knew. That's because the tale of Bruno has been impossible to miss on TV, radio and in print.
His every move has been chronicled since he first made the unfortunate decision to wander over to Deutschland and kill some sheep and chickens (he never harmed a human). There were charts and graphics in the papers - and not just the tabloids - showing his movement across Germany, as he was tracked by specialists, including an elite group of hunters brought in from Finland (I'm not making this up). When he showed up, it created an immediate stir.
There were dueling debates among politicians about what should be done, with my German friends telling me, one official from Bavaria particularly nutso about the whole affair. He went on prolonged, rambling spiels about the bear and its greater meaning and what should be done. There were epic struggles on how to classify the bear. I think you've decided by now whether or not you want to keep reading.
