Idle thoughts of a relatively libertarian Republican in Cambridge, MA, and whomever he invites. Mostly political.

I've listened to the Michael Medved show a few times. I think of him as principally a social conservative, and I've expected to disagree with him a lot, but he seems quite respectful of callers who disagree with him (which is, increasingly, how I judge a radio talk-show host). So I've continued to tune in once in a while.

But I think I'm coming to understand why he's able to deal so civilly with mainstream liberals. It's because most of the people he talks to are so far off of the playing field that Howard Dean and Medved don't seem all that far apart. Their conspiracy theories are certainly less wacky than those of Medved's callers. On one show last week, I heard him try (respectfully) to understand the position of one caller who reminded me of the LaRouche people I run into every few years (he mentioned BCCI, which I think the LaRouchies still care about, and something else rang a bell). I tuned in tonight and he had a guest arguing that 9/11 was a set-up. I listened for about ten minutes, but I ran out of patience.

Instead, I'm listening to an Instapodcast about the "Shangri-La Diet", which doesn't forbid any foods in any quantities, but trumpets the hunger-suppressant power of olive oil and sugar-water. It sounds pretty interesting. Maybe I'll give it a try.
