Idle thoughts of a relatively libertarian Republican in Cambridge, MA, and whomever he invites. Mostly political.

Just over a year ago, I wrote:
The second thought I've had [regarding improving education]... is this: everyone should be required to attend a non-sporting event and then read or watch a reporter's account of it. Preferably several times. Very few reporters tell outright lies, but they all simplify and dramatize and focus on aspects of a story that other witnesses will consider unimportant. People should experience this for themselves, to learn what parts of a report to trust and what parts not to trust.
When I see a speech that I know is going to be covered in the next day's paper, I like to try to guess what part they will consider important. I'm pretty bad at this game. For example, I don't think I would ever have come up with this.

A few months ago, I remember thinking that it was likely that our troop levels would be down to half what they are now by the end of Bush's term. I've tended to view this prediction as an optimistic one.
