Idle thoughts of a relatively libertarian Republican in Cambridge, MA, and whomever he invites. Mostly political.

The Academy Awards are tonight. My roommate ran into me in front of the TV in the kitchen and asked whether I was checking up on them. "No," I said, a little surprised that he'd have to ask. "It suppose I could probably care less, but I can't imagine how."

After some consideration, though, I did come up with something I care about less than Hollywood's opinion of the movies that came out last year: Hollywood's opinion of anything else.

A week and a half ago, I think, there was a one-hour block in which the fourth most watched TV show had more than 14 million viewers. I happened to get home from work during that hour, and had the TV on for about 10 minutes while doing something else, after which I turned it off; nobody else, apparently, was watching what I was watching either. (The four were the Olympics, American Idol, Survivor -- which I didn't realize still existed -- and Dancing with the Stars, which I didn't realize was remotely popular.)

Another thing to care less about than Hollywood's opinions of the movies that came out last year is Hollywood's opinion of poltical matters.
