There's a recent book by a Frenchman "travelling America in the footsteps of Tocqueville". Garrison Keillor doesn't think much of it.

I saw this guy on Charlie Rose ? who mentioned that he's in the book and is friends with the author ? and, while he did seem to have certain neuroses, he also seemed to have captured some of the reasons I love America ? in particular a tendency (as Nancy Kassebaum once claimed as distinctly Republican) to solve problems at a local level instead of waiting for the national government to solve them from above.
