Idle thoughts of a relatively libertarian Republican in Cambridge, MA, and whomever he invites. Mostly political.

"A strong conviction that something must be done is the parent of many bad measures."

Someone on a panel discussion on TV last night commented that a lot of liberals feel Bush stole the election. One of the other panelists noted that subsequent studies found that Bush would have won Florida regardless of the Supreme Court decision, and the first panelist responded that Bush didn't receive a majority of the popular vote. (That may be a paraphrase, but he did in fact use the word "majority" instead of "plurality". But I'll let that go.)

I might well vote for Bush on Tuesday, just to make it that much likelier that any discrepancy between the electoral vote and the popular vote be in Kerry's favor. I may lack imagination, but I don't see Republicans suggesting that an election was "stolen" because it was won by the actual rules, rather than some other set of rules.
