Idle thoughts of a relatively libertarian Republican in Cambridge, MA, and whomever he invites. Mostly political.

Wednesday, October 06, 2004 :::
A bill to reinstate the draft failed miserably, 402-2. The only two in favor were Murtha and Pete Stark, which is odd considering that Rangel (who voted against it) sponsored the sucker.
Usually when I see a House vote of something to two, I assume Ron Paul was one of the two. I didn't expect that this time.
Of the 29 not voting, at least four are running for the Senate (Hoeffel, DeMint, Majette, and Nethercutt — there may be others, but they aren't obvious to me). They're probably out campaigning rather than voting on stunt-legislation, which we all know is what this is.
UPDATE: Rangel — the sponsor of the bill — denounced the Republican House leadership for engaging in cynical parliamentary maneuvering in bringing the bill up for a vote. A quote from the Washington Post, which neither I nor Dave Barry is making up:"It's a shame that ... this legislative body is being used as a political tool on the eve of elections." Ellipsis in the original.
