Because I have too much time on my hands, I took a highly simplified sketch of the continental United States
and told my computer to adjust it so that each state would have an area proportional to its electoral votes in the new apportionment
It occurs to me there are bits of the algorithm that may encourage the states to become rounder. The states can mostly be made out in the top cartoon, and are entirely unrecognizable in the bottom one. (I added the colors, in fact, in order to help identify which state is which.)
I'm not planning to spend my time quite as frivolously for the next few months as I have very recently, but I do have some intention of improving the algorithm and, one would hope, the results. It's possible I'll post some such improvement in the next two weeks, but it's also possible I won't.
