Mankiw:When the government taxes pecuniary benefits, I spend more time on those activities that yield non-pecuniary benefits. Some of those activities may look like leisure, but others may be better described as "fun work" rather than "income-producing work." Blogging, for instance, or writing op-eds that particularly inflame the left-wing blogosphere. The last bit is especially amusing coming from Mankiw, who is not generally much of a bomb-thrower; certainly he sticks quite closely to legitimate argument, and excruciatingly polite argument, and away from the name-calling and personal insults of many bloggers and other commentators. (cf. Ann Coulter or Keith Olbermann, though they're extreme examples, who seem to take "inflaming" people as their cause to the exclusion of intellectual content.)
