Sunday, June 25, 2006 :::
The NCAA is going to hear a proposal that their division 1 championship basketball tournament be expanded to 128 teams. Also, instead of single-elimination, it should be a double round robin.
Okay, I made that last part up. It's still less nutty than 65, though.
UPDATE: A paragraph from that story:"They'd love to see the tournament double to 128," said Jim Haney, executive director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. "It's based on several things. First, there are a lot of good teams worthy of making the NCAA field, and second, the size of 64 or 65 has been in place for a number of years." Question: what makes a team "worthy of making the NCAA field"? I would think the main criterion would be having a plausible claim to be the best team in the country. There has not been any team excluded in recent years that has had such a plausible claim.
